Anyone know if there's a distance limit to inviting people to raids?

Followup question: If there's not a distance limit, anyone interested in organizing raids for the Lake Trio (Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie) so folks can get whichever ones they're not in the region for?

Edit: Sounds like there's probably no distance limit on raid invites, so: Anyone want in on an Azelf raid over the next couple of days? Drop a comment with a good time to recruit you and your time zone, and I'll see what I can do!

So I noticed this:

If I battle a gym leader one a day regularly, I'll get stardust that first battle.

I didn't battle a gym leader for a couple of days, and when I finally got around to it, I got a Sinnoh stone.

Curious, I battled again the next day, and the next, three days in a row, stardust three days in a row.

Gave it a rest for a day, battled, and then got another Sinnoh stone.

Anybody else see this too?

I've also battled a couple of friends, and even in battles where I win, they'll get Sinnoh stones. One friend lost twice in a row, and got two Sinnoh stones both times she lost.

Raids!

As of last night, raids are now available to players 25 and up, and at a "wide variety of gyms" throughout the world. I've got two gyms in map-sight of home; one of them has a level one raid this hour, and the other has a level four raid coming up in a bit over an hour. Hopefully an achievable raid comes soon to a gym near you!

*edit* ha, and the third gym that's just slightly out of sight has.a level three raid in an hour and a half.

*edit 2* and now the first gym has a raid back up again, level two. So I'm feeling pretty good about the frequency.*

Iiiiiiiiinteresting!

I like the new battle pre screen, and the animation of fights.

New battle scoring on the one hand slows things down (you eat away at the defenders will to fight rather than 1000 points per win) on the other hand I like how the "injured" pokemon gets weaker. Also having revive and health available inside the gym interface

Winning a gym = getting a badge, but just claiming a gym slot does not, and nor does spinning a gym picture, which is what the text suggests.

No sign of coins for having pokemon on a gym...
<- artifacts of my posting about experiences in the first 30 mins or so of gyms being live.

How is everyone else getting on?

So I was just out restocking on items and discovered some places where I couldn't get them, because the pokestop I was going for had become a (currently disabled) gym. Of course once the updates hit and we can spin gyms, this will be all for the better. Meanwhile, I checked out a few local hot spots and estimate that about 10% of existing pokestop locations have converted to gyms. Now that only six people will be able to get on a gym at once, more is certainly welcome!

Spawn points are a little harder to pin down, but I'm pretty sure new spawns have been added as well. I'm very familiar with the possible points in my neighborhood, and just saw quite a few spawns at new locations. Particularly noticeable was the fact that I got several spawn smack in the middle of the road, which almost never happened before and I thought was a no-no to keep kids from wandering into the street (not that you can't reach them from the sidewalk). I almost wonder if someone at Niantic forgot to run a not_on_roads filter when generating a new batch of points... we'll have to see if they stick around.

There are a lot of changes, so just go read the entire post!

In a nutshell:
  • You'll be able to get items from gyms like you can pokestops.

  • Each gym defender must be unique. (i.e. No stacking Blisseys).

  • Gyms will now only have 6 defenders!

  • Gym defenders must be kept motivated via berries or they'll return to their trainers. (I think this is a way to let more people interact with gyms even when all slots are filled?)

  • We'll earn gym badges.

  • The Collaborative Feature: Raid Battles - Basically, from time to time, a Raid Boss will take over gyms -- kicking out all current defenders -- and trainers will have to work together to beat the Raid Boss.

Gyms are going to be disabled in a few hours, so get your bonuses ASAP if you haven't already. ETA 12:41 PM EDT: Gyms have been disabled.

Lots of stuff happening this week!
  • Nests have migrated again. Visit your local nests & see what's out there. Note: The Silph Road has deactivated nest reports for water 'mon during the Water Festival.

  • Shiny 'mon are now live in-game! So far, it's just Magikarp (gold) and Gyarados (red). Don't know what shiny 'mon are? Here's an FAQ.

  • I'm unclear as to whether this is only for the duration of the Water Festival but a magikarp hat has been added to the avatar customization options.

I'll be putting up a free-for-all thread this weekend!

And here are the official patch notes:
  • You’ll earn bonuses for the first Pokémon catch and PokéStop visit each day. You’ll receive a larger bonus when you do this seven days in a row. (note: this was a server-side update because I started getting the bonus yesterday whereas the game update hit my Android this afternoon.)

  • When you defeat the Gym Leader at a rival Gym, there will be a brief period of time where only you will be able to place a Pokémon in the open Gym. (read: no more gym sniping!)

  • The amount of Prestige a rival Gym loses when you defeat a regular Gym member has increased. The amount of Prestige gained by training at a friendly Gym has been lowered. (note: the prestige amounts are basically doubled and halved for fighting rival gyms and training friendly gyms, respectively.)

  • Minor text fixes. (note: I don't know if it's just me but I don't like the new text fixes, which seem to involve making the font face smaller.)

Other changes:
  • Pokestops are now speed-locked! I'm not sure what the limits are, but I suspect they're similar to speed limits for spawning?

  • On the other hand, pokestops are now dropping A LOT more items. I don't know if it's linked to the daily quests or if it's random. I will tell you that the pokestop outside of my neighborhood gave me TWELVE ITEMS when I spun it. ETA: Actually, this seems to be an event that Niantic is hosting to celebrate the daily bonuses! More info!

What do we think about the update?

Hello trainers! As you've no doubt noticed by now, the Halloween event has come to an end. I hope you enjoyed it and had a great time catching the event pokémon. :D

Niantic has announced a few updates for us. It's not quite clear when these changes will go live (or if they already have). Reports are conflicting at the moment.

• Look alive! Nests have migrated.

• Along those lines, spawning diversity has increased and you won't be seeing as many pidgeys, rattatas, and zubats as before. (source)

• As [personal profile] healingmirth pointed out in last week's post, eevees will now hatch from 5km eggs while pidgeys and rattatas will no longer hatch from 2km eggs. Oh no! But I'm still trying to evolve that good IV pidgeot with wing attack/hurricane!! (source)

• And finally, we will be getting daily bonuses for doing certain in-game activities everyday! More details here. This change will hopefully be included in the next game update, which if the schedule holds up, will start rolling out next week.

Any interesting bits of news from your neck of the woods? How do you feel about these upcoming changes?

For that matter...

Niantic rolled out a minor update with the patch note: "minor bug fixes." I don't know what those bugs were, but if your app updates, don't be surprised.

As for the tip: nest pokemon and water spawns are not affected by the Halloween shake-up. So take advantage of the doubled candies if you're working on, say, a gyarados and have water biomes near you!

[personal profile] inkstone
And surprise! We're seeing increased spawn rates for other ~spooky~ 'mon! The current list includes: gastly, haunter, gengar, zubat, golbat, drowzee, hypno, cubone, marowak & meowth!

(I can confirm because I caught a gastly while sitting in my bed and I still see one in sightings, along with cubone. Neither of them are common around me.)

In terms of buddy candy, you earn 1 per quarter of the regular walking distance! (So it's not 4 candy received at once. It's .25km, .75km & 1.25km!)

AND CHECK OUT THE START-UP SCREEN.

This is such a fun update! If you love Halloween as much as me, I hope you will enjoy it too!

ETA at 8:47PM EDT: OMG SHENANIGANS. Some of the pokemon are masked! I just caught a zubat and IT TURNED INTO A MAGIKARP. This might be a glitch but I don't think so because people are reporting it on The Silph Road subreddit. (Or maybe it's a glitch that multiple people are experiencing. Maybe it was a transition thing? Ngl, I'm a little disappointed!)

News was pretty light this week -- aside from numerous complaints from disgruntled PokeGo players -- so it's another combo post.

In terms of the game itself, here are some newsbits that might be of interest:

• Nests have migrated again.

• Pokémon no longer spawn if you're going over 30mph. While this is meant to deter playing while driving, it also inadvertantly penalizes people who play while riding as passengers or take public transportation. I believe you can still spin pokestops, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Aside from that...

How was your week in PokeGo?!

Happy Friday, trainers!

Relatively light in terms of news this week, but that's okay because we have a game update!

Game Updates

As [personal profile] me_and pointed out, Niantic released an update! Actually, we had three this week: a larger one that included the changes I mentioned last week, a smaller one with minor audio fixes, and another smaller one with minor text fixes.

Here is a list of all of the changes. It has screencaps that are helpful for visualization since there are interface changes.

A couple notes:
  • The Catch Bonus: When you encounter a pokémon, you now see the relevant medals you've earned at the top of the screen. Sharp-eyed trainers will also sometimes see those medals flash again when you've successfully caught the pokémon (the "Gotcha!" screen). People are still trying to figure out what that reappearance means because it's inconsistent. A lot of theories floating around, but nothing definitive so far.

  • Gym Training: The CP of defender pokémon scales down in relation to your trainer level. So if you're a level 25 trainer and the gym you're training up has 3 defenders from level 15, level 23, and level 29 trainers, only the pokémon from the level 29 trainer will scale down. It will scale down to your trainer level+2. So in my example, the defender from the level 29 trainer would scale down to level 27.

The gym training changes are a bit of a refinement, so I'll make a post next Tuesday about the new system for everyone to share tips, advice & strategies.

PokeGo & You

A joint research study between Stanford and Microsoft found that PokeGo increases physical activity across all genders, age brackets, and weight levels. I know this is a shocking revelation to find in a game that encourages people to go outside and catch invisible pocket monsters. (The Study)

Sorry, yesterday got away from me so it's a news + free chat combo post this week. Unlike the past couple round-ups, a lot happened this week. I'm going to try to organize things to make them easier to parse, so here we go.

Game Updates
• PokeGo has launched in over 40 new countries. Due to the number, I'm not going to list them individually but you can see the full lists here and here. Sorry, India and South Korea are not among the new launch territories. I know they've been waiting a while.

• Niantic added a server side update where new-to-you pokémon sighted in gyms are now registered as being seen in your pokedex. So if you're like me and still don't have a dragonite but your local gym meta is dominated by the orange Barney, you will see its silhouette in your pokedex.

• Look alive! Nests have migrated again!

• In a future update, the medals you've earned will now make a difference! More specifically, the medals you earn for catching specific types of pokémon will make catching future pokémon from that category easier. For example, earning a gold medal in catching pidgeys will make it easier to catch gyarados. (more details)

• Also in a forthcoming update, the way you train friendly gyms will change. You will be able to bring 6 pokémon (like if you were attacking a rival gym) and the CP of defenders will adjust to your level, which will allow lower level trainers to participate in the gym scene. (more details)

• Niantic continues its efforts to block third-party apps. (source)

more highlights from this week )

That's it for this week!

Any thoughts about the latest in-game updates? What about the other newsbits? And how was your week in PokeGo?

Let's talk about it here.

Look alive! The third nest migration is here. But this nest migration is a little different from the past two...

• In addition to nests changing, new nests have appeared.

• Unfortunately, some nests have also disappeared.

• Higher evolutions can now be found at nests! Previously, only base evolutions could be found at nests. So now, you might find Wigglytuff at a Jigglypuff nest, for example.

• There are also new spawning locations. My neighborhood added 4-5!

• But...some spawning locations have also vanished.

• Spawning times have also changed. If you're used to mon spawning at certain times, you might need to readjust. I know I'm having to figure out the new schedule in my neighborhood!

What are things looking like around you?
