Hello trainers!

Hope your week has been going well and you've been enjoying the influx of new pokemon. While your mod is sad she didn't see any Chansey during the last event, she is laughing at how cute Gen 2 is.

Here are a couple bits that may be of interest:

• Gen 2 brings the addition of two new eeveelutions: espeon and umbreon. As with jolteon, vaporeon, and flareon, you can use the rename trick to get the eeveelution of your choice. In this case, Sakura and Tamao will get you espeon and umbreon, respectively. Remember, the rename trick is guaranteed to work only once, so choose your eevee-to-be-evolved wisely. However, some determined trainers did some research and found another way to get espeon and umbreon without using the rename trick (and thus allowing you to do it multiple times). (read more but also keep this in mind)

• We're getting another in-game event! To celebrate Pokemon Day on February 27, Pikachu will be getting a fancy hat from the afternoon of February 26 until the afternoon of March 6. (more info)

Good morning, trainers!

  • If Niantic continues to follow their schedule, the next nest change is set to happen later this week. If you have something good at your local nests, better hit them up soon! They might switch to something less than ideal. I say this as someone whose favorite local nest became a caterpie hotbed. Sigh. Maybe it'll become something good.

  • It looks like Niantic updated the in-game map. Look around! You might find that there are new pokestops and gyms near you! (source)

  • In more somber news, a 60-year-old grandfather was shot and killed by a security guard while playing PokeGo. The guard claims it was in self-defense, but it's hard to imagine the exact circumstances that would necessitate shooting a man through the windshield of his van when he was likely fighting a PokeGo gym. It's an unfortunate reminder that in these uncertain times, every trainer needs to be careful and that not only should they be aware of their surroundings, they also need to be mindful of the impression that they're giving. Take it from someone who's definitely abandoned an early morning gym battle when she saw a security guard in the vicinity. (source)

Hello trainers! I come bearing some news. :)

  • A new update is rolling out for PokeGo. The release notes say that this update will reduce the loading time on Android (thank god!) and fix the Go Plus connectivity issues. Reports are also saying that sound no longer stops when you launch the game. Hopefully this means we can continue listening to podcasts uninterrupted now! The good folks at The Silph Road are currently doing a data mine of the latest update, so hopefully we'll find out if there are any other hidden changes soon. (source)

  • Nests have indeed migrated once again. In the last post, people asked what a nest was and I realized, wow! We never explained that properly, did we? So here we go. Nests are basically locations where a certain type of pokemon spawns in increased numbers. The most obvious manifestation of a nest is one where a specific type of pokemon will spawn in a cluster of 2-3 at the same time. But it can be something more subtle where a specific type of pokemon spawns regularly throughout the day at the same location. I have a spot like this outside my neighborhood, for example. Nests are not the same thing as biomes and early in the game, people got them confused. But half a year out, they're pretty clearly delineated. Want to find out if there are nests near you? Check out The Silph Road's nest atlas! This is user generated though, so all caveats apply.

  • In a blast from the past: Remember last summer when certain jurisdictions wanted to pass an ordinance requiring that augmented reality games obtain a permit to function in certain parks? They're still at it. Wow. (source)

Hello trainers!

It looks like the game has received a minor update, mostly addressing Korean language support. Yes, that's right. PokeGo has officially launched in South Korea! Welcome!

We are also expecting the next nest migration to happen later this week. Be on the lookout!

And since it's been a while, I'd like to have a free chat in the comments. How is your PokeGo playing going, trainers? Noticed any interesting new trends?

PokeGo New Year celebration loading screen

Some of us have already bid 2016 adieu. Some of us are still waiting to welcome 2017.

It's been almost 6 months since I started this community. The game has had its ups and it's had its downs, but we are still here, catching these little pocket monsters!

How are y'all doing? Enjoying the event? Braving the cold? Desperately chasing after starter 'mon? Let's chat!

Hello, trainers!

It's been a couple weeks since we had a proper free-for-all, so let's catch up! How's the event been treating you? With the nest migration happening a couple days ago, anything interesting pop up near you? Let's chat.

Posting this early because I'll be out and about this weekend, so I'll be short on time.

ICYMI: As [personal profile] healingmirth pointed out in the comments of the last free chat, nests have migrated once again! In addition, the new Nearby tracker has rolled out to the rest of the continental US and large sections of Europe.

With the nest migration, I suspect a game update won't be too far behind. I wonder what'll be included?

With the new CP rebalancing, I figured we should feature this guy since he got a boost.

Hello trainers!

I hope you're enjoying the double XP/stardust event and that, if you live in the US, you had a lovely Thanksgiving.

The current in-game event + Ditto + CP rebalancing seems to have stolen a lot of attention, so not much in the way of news. I did find this little piece about how PokeGo can be used to encourage interest in conservation efforts. I thought it was a nice change of pace from all the "POKEGO IS DESTROYING OUR PARKS!!" articles, which -- if you do enough digging -- a not-insignificant number seem to stem from affluent people freaking out over the riff-raff.

Since it's been a while, how are y'all doing? Enjoying the in-game event? Struggling to find a ditto? Mad about the CP rebalancing? Let's chat.

Hello, trainers!

Normally, this is where I present a list of links for you to read: about the game, about its impact in the real world, about people's reactions to it. Alas, I live in the U.S. and like many people from marginalized backgrounds who live here, I am dismayed by recent events. To put it mildly.

So. There are no links from me this week. I'll try my best to get it together by next week. This weekend, though, I open the floor to you! What are some interesting stories you've stumbled across the past few days? Uplifting and positive stories are especially welcome. I think many of us from the U.S. would appreciate seeing some light in the world.

Other than that, how was in your week in PokeGo?

Hello trainers! As you've no doubt noticed by now, the Halloween event has come to an end. I hope you enjoyed it and had a great time catching the event pokémon. :D

Niantic has announced a few updates for us. It's not quite clear when these changes will go live (or if they already have). Reports are conflicting at the moment.

• Look alive! Nests have migrated.

• Along those lines, spawning diversity has increased and you won't be seeing as many pidgeys, rattatas, and zubats as before. (source)

• As [personal profile] healingmirth pointed out in last week's post, eevees will now hatch from 5km eggs while pidgeys and rattatas will no longer hatch from 2km eggs. Oh no! But I'm still trying to evolve that good IV pidgeot with wing attack/hurricane!! (source)

• And finally, we will be getting daily bonuses for doing certain in-game activities everyday! More details here. This change will hopefully be included in the next game update, which if the schedule holds up, will start rolling out next week.

Any interesting bits of news from your neck of the woods? How do you feel about these upcoming changes?

For that matter...

Hi trainers! I hope you've been enjoying this Halloween event! Here are some highlights from this week in PokeGo.

• Niantic had to change the ToS and privacy policy in Germany. I wonder if we'll see similar actions in other territories. (source)

• To everyone who's been having trouble getting their hands on a Go Plus, Nintendo plans to expand production. (source)

• Niantic announces a PokeGo partnership with Globe Telecom, the Philippines' largest mobile brand. The deal sounds similar to the McDonalds sponsorship in Japan. (source)

• I know we're probably tired of hearing about the ways PokeGo is destroying people's lives, but this headline caught my eye: A PokeGo trainer makes a friend through the game; friend turns out to be a yakuza member; trainer gets blackmailed. Yikes. (source)

And now, let's talk about how the Halloween event has been going for you!

News was pretty light this week -- aside from numerous complaints from disgruntled PokeGo players -- so it's another combo post.

In terms of the game itself, here are some newsbits that might be of interest:

• Nests have migrated again.

• Pokémon no longer spawn if you're going over 30mph. While this is meant to deter playing while driving, it also inadvertantly penalizes people who play while riding as passengers or take public transportation. I believe you can still spin pokestops, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Aside from that...

Just kidding! The new PokeGo update is now available in all app stores!

The official patch notes:
  • Capture location: The location where a Pokémon was caught will now be displayed on their information screen.

  • Pokémon GO Plus and Incense: Trainers can attempt to capture Pokémon they encounter from using Incense with the Pokémon GO Plus accessory.

  • Fixed a bug that caused some users to get stuck on the loading screen, even after restarting the app.

  • Fixed a bug where the camera sometimes moved at slow speeds during battle.

  • Minor bug fixes

an observation about gym battles post-update )

Anyway! How was your week in PokeGo, trainers?
