I'm heading out of town to see the Perseid meteor shower (cross your fingers that skies remain clear) so I'm posting the Weekend Free-for-All early.

If you're planning to PokeHunt this weekend, good luck! I haven't left town since PokeGo launched so I have no idea what it looks like outside the Metro DC area. Will I catch new and exciting pokémon or will I be in a PokeGo wasteland? Guess I'll find out! ^^v

I CAUGHT A LAPRAS. I was collecting a non-Pokemon-playing acquaintance, I glanced down at my auxiliary internet device in my lap and saw a Lapras shadow in the Sightings bar and thought "AUGH I wish I could go hunt that", I glanced down again and it had vanished and thought "... oh well" sadly to myself, and THEN I REALISED IT WAS RIGHT THERE AND I CAUGHT IT.

I was very, very excited. BABY'S FIRST LAPRAS. :D

(Also I now have enough Slowpoke and Dratini to evolve one of each, which \o/, and I caught my biggest Magikarp to date...)

My decision to switch to filling out my pokedex from speed leveling has paid off. And, perhaps, the last update's switching out of spawning locations has been very kind to me.

This week, I caught for the first time: Arbok, Tauros, Wartortle, Psyduck, Dratini, and Slowbro.

I evolved for the first time: Golduck and Haunter.

I also hatched a Magmar!

After a string of Jolteon evolutions, I've evolved 2 Vaporeons. Aside from the one-time eeveelution cheat, Flareon continues to elude me.

OMG, V, POWERLEVELING IS SO HARD NOW /weeps

Hurray for new pokemon, congratulations! It always strikes me as funny how for lots of people eeveelutions are super common, whereas for me Eevees are so hard to get... and on the reverse, I'm swimming in Psyducks and Magnemites. Hah! It's cool seeing the differences in locations!

I ran out into the rain last night because there was an Eevee in the neighbourhood. I regret nothing.

I hit level 20! It was my goal for the week and after saving up a lot of evolutions I broke out my lucky egg yesterday and went for it.

New to me: Butterfree, Arbok, Clefable, Golduck, Starmie.

While my lucky egg was running, I hatched a 5k egg and got an Abra, which with one previous hatch and one catch gave me enough to evolve to Kadabra! And then I stomped uphill across a very muddy field muttering about how the tracking couldn't possibly be working, only to find that a) it was and b) I'd found the exeggcute I needed to evolve Exeggutor.

I don't have much free time next week and the weather's pretty appalling, but I'm very happy with this week's achievements.

Good news for the week: I hit level 20! It's kind of hilarious that I now have many great balls and ultra balls, but I don't have any regular Pokeballs. (But also very true to my experience.) I also had one day where I had Pokemon in two gyms and got the corresponding defender bonus, which was a first for me.

Less good news: the amount of Pokemon in my neighborhood seems to have drastically decreased. I walked enough to nearly hatch a 5k egg yesterday and spotted/caught maybe fewer than 10 Pokemon? I used to do much better. I'm not sure if it's my level or changes to the app, but it's frustrating. (Also frustrating: the amount of 2k eggs I have. I JUST WANT A SNORLAX.)

It looks like the last update (not the minor iOS one but the one before it) reshuffled spawning locations and nests. I'm definitely seeing more of a variety of pokémon around my house whereas before it was the usual pidgey/weedle/rattata trifecta.

My wife heard a tip-off about Magmars locally, and I didn't have one. Now I have two, caught within minutes of each other behind our local arts centre! Up to 119 in my pokedex now, but a lot of the blanks are evolutions of the starter pokemon and I'm just not finding or hatching those *anywhere*, alas.

I did catch a tauros! But it wasn't as good as the one I hatched so I turned it in for candy.

I also caught a lickitung and a pinsir, firsts for me. Failed to track down two bulbasaur, but then finally caught one later the same day on the bus ride home. Also hit up the local magikarp hotspot, which is fittingly at a seafood restaurant. I also got a bunch of slowpoke there, enough psyduck to evolve a slightly better golduck, and a dratini so i was able to evolve to dragonair.

Eggs have been pretty good too: 2 cubone, ekans, and a squirtle! So now I have a marowak and I need just one more each of the others for an arbok and a wartortle.

I started playing two days ago. I am now level 5, and have: two Psyducks, a Slowpoke, a Zubat, a Pidgey, a Staryu, a Clefairy, a Vaporeon (that's what it was when I caught it, not an Evee), a Nidoran (assigned F by the game), two Magikarp, a Poliwag, a Horsea, a Squirtle (my starter), and a Rattata. This is in addition to the duplicates I've been throwing to the Professor.

I also have two cats, insomnia, and a very strong headache.

And on my walks I've seen two ringtailed possums but didn't try to capture them.

I ran out of Pokeballs walking yesterday and thus missed out on my first sighting of a Ponyta. Alas! But I did find out where one Pokestop in walking distance of my home is. I couldn't hit it today because I'm in Louisiana and my parish has, uh, been under flash flood warning since like 5 a.m. But at least I know where it is for future, less rainy days!

I am within 1.5 K of hatching my first 10k egg! (I don't have cellular data so the only way I can hatch eggs is via the GPS glitch, so it's kind of like hatching eggs in real life: nothing I do can make them hatch any sooner or later, I just have to wait and hope.)

(I'm level 18 and have hatched 3 eggs so far, 2 2k and 1 5k. My first 10k is going to be really exciting!)

I hit level 21 yesterday! I haven't been focusing a lot on powerleveling, just on catching ALL THE POKES, so that was a nice surprise.

I hatched a 900+ CP Porygon yesterday, too, which made me even more pleased than the leveling. That is pretty much what I'm all about, the cute pokemon!

...But because I am also the stereotypical Valor hothead who's just looking for a fight I've taken down four gyms (three of them were pretty strong!) this week, BECAUSE VALOR. WOOOOOH. I mean, I didn't hold them that long, but still! VALOR. :D :D :D

We took a gym! lilacsigil and me! It was seriously undermanned when we took it, and we only held it for an hour, but first gym! We were proud and took many screencaps.

I'm going to crochet a pikachu hat, if I can figure out the odd notation on this free pattern: Pikachu hat.

It has been So Hot here that I haven't done anything outdoors that didn't involve going directly to or from a car or air conditioned building since last week. I meant to get up a liiiiiittle earlier today for a run, but ugh, mornings. So we'll see how this goes, but I'm determined to hatch the three 5km eggs that have been mocking me in their incubators.

And I was just awake enough to catch myself before I leave the house and remember that my last run was cut short by the heel of my running sneakers having been chewed through without my noticing, so this may be at a walk while I break in new shoes. But I'm determined, dang it.


Also discovered that my 800cp Vaporeon can take down my 1200cp Magmar for 750 prestige a pop, which will be handy in the future when I take over a gym and want to level it up a bit.

Yup! Vaporeon has a type advantage over Magmar, and the bigger the differential between underpowered attacking pokémon and defending pokémon, the more prestige awarded!

I still haven't figured out how combat works. Last night I stood there while the trainer knocked out my pokemon, waiting for it to be my turn to hit back. Tonight I went to a gym held by a different team (since I'd heard it's easier than training in a gym your team holds) and just button-mashed (touchscreen-mashed?) the opponent over and over, and I got a few hits in and managed to dodge a few hits maybe? but still got clobbered.

Also tonight, I had dinner at fasangel's place, and met the local wild pokemon near her. She lives near enough to a pokestop that I can get items from her living room (unfortunately she doesn't play) and also turned AR on and took a lot of photos of fasangel with pokemon.

The best one: fasangel had her hands over her face, because camera, and the Zubat was flapping up near her head, so it looked like she was protecting herself from the wild Zubat.

I found this guide to training, capturing, and defending gyms really useful! Not that I'm at a high enough level to take on gym, but it was very clearly written.

If you ever come to Gettysburg and are there to be touristy, I can inform you that there is no lack of Pokemon stops and gyms. They are even on the battlefield.

And now I know why so many people get overwhelmed by Pidgey and Rattata in other areas. But I finally caught enough Eevees to evolve a second Eevee, this time to Flareon and hopefully I'll get enough for Jolteon as well. Finally saw a Pikachu shadow on the radar/search for the first time, but didn't feel up to searching.

Haven't been on the actual battlefield, just in town, so I don't know what kinds you can catch there.

(BTW, I would not be surprised if a lot of historical tourist towns are like this, especially if it is a major civil war battle site because of the sheer amount of monuments.)

Hm, in other news, caught a Grimer for the first time at work as well as my second Voltorb which I named ANGRY because it was glaring at me and was difficult to catch. Caught my first fire Pokemon, a Vulpix and hatched one as well. Tried to catch a 800 CP Taros. It ran away. :(

Also took over the gym near work on Friday afternoon. It has been held for 24 hours almost now again. Already have gotten my bonus for it plus for the gym I added prestige to after breakfast and dropped off a Pokemon at.

(I am so amused at the idea that right now I am currently defending gyms in two different towns at the same time. Yay Team Mystic!)

I'm back in town!

I saw meteors! It was cool!

While it wasn't a PokeGo wasteland, the area was not conducive to actual pokehunting. Which was a shame because I saw a Dragonite silhouette and a Charmander silhouette! But for various reasons, I was scared of going after them. (No sidewalks, no walkable paths, many No Trespassing signs, etc.)
