An omanyte! I've never seen one in the wild. I hatched mine. I have to figure out what to do about that since I want to get the next one in the evolutionary chain to fill out my pokedex.
Omanytes are so hard to come by! And I kind of lurve them, so it's very frustrating!
For what it's worth, both of the two I've seen & caught as well as the one I failed to track down before it despawned were very near the coast, within just a few blocks of the water (a major bay on the Pacific coast of the US).
Oooooh. Okay! That helps. I was only thinking of them in terms of water pokemon but maybe there's a fine distinction in terms of water terrains for spawns.

Caught my first Arbok and Omanyte, hatched a Ponyta and a Tentacruel, and evolved a Starmie and a Kingler.
Also saw the outline of a Bulbasaur for the first time, but again was on the bus so couldn't try to track it down.
