Tomorrow, Sunday, 5 June, is Gible Community Day (11am to 5pm local time). Read Niantic's blog post.
To get the maximum Gible candies on Community Day, I plan to evolve a dragon-type mega. Currently, Mega-Altaria, Mega-Ampharos, and Mega-Charizard X qualify. Read about megas on Niantic's help.
As I understand it, we don't need to set the mega as our buddy to earn the extra candy. The mega can be hanging out quietly in our storage, and we'll still earn bonus candy. (This is unlike earning mega energy by walking, which is buddy-based, and unlike the mega battle damage bonus, which requires the mega to be in the battle.)
Have a fun Community Day!

"You can earn additional Pokémon Candies when you have an active Mega-Evolved Pokémon and you catch a Pokémon that shares a type with your Mega-Evolved Pokémon."
"After they’re Mega-Evolved, Mega-Evolved Pokémon will stay in their Mega-Evolved form for 8 hours, after which they will return to their regular form."
"You can earn Mega Energy by defeating a Mega-Evolved Pokémon in a Raid Battle or completing specific research tasks. You can also occasionally earn Mega Energy by walking with your Buddy Pokémon if you have previously Mega-Evolved a Pokémon in your Buddy Pokémon’s Evolutionary line."
