inkstone: small blue flowers resting on a wooden board (PokeGo)
[personal profile] inkstone posting in [community profile] pokestop
Good morning, fellow trainers!

First off, we have an update from Niantic addressing recent changes to the game -- more specifically, the removal of the three-step display and the limiting of access by third-party sites.

Now, onto the main point of this post! So by its nature, Pokémon Go is a game where you discover how things work in the wild, so to speak. You learn by doing. You learn by interacting with other players. (Which is one of the reasons this community exists!) I thought it'd be nice to collect various resources in one place that people could refer to. Here are some to get us started:

Pokémon Go server status: The servers have drastically improved since the first two weeks of the game's launch but for those times where you're having problems logging in, this site has you covered.

Evolution calculator: You can generally get an idea of your pokémon's CP potential by looking at the arc on the detail page but if you really need to know the exact number it'll have post-evolution, here's the calculator of your dreams.

Get the eeveelution of your choice: This is one of the easter eggs of the game. Left alone, eevee evolves into one of three forms: vaporeon, flareon, and jolteon. It's random. Except for when it isn't. There are many guides explaining how you control it but I included the link shared by [personal profile] st_aurafina in one of last week's posts. Please note: This is guaranteed to work the first time you use it for each of the eeveelutions. The jury is out on whether you can get it to work again. Some people say you can. Some people say you can't. I personally have not been able to. No matter what I do, I get nothing but jolteons. Except for when it's super super hot. Then I get flareons.

Pokémon rarity chart: Some people have asked for a pokémon rarity chart. This is one of the later ones put together by the folks on Reddit. Understand, though, that rarity is a subjective term in PokeGo and your geographical location influences what you see more often.

So what are some of your favorite resources? Let's share with the community!

Honestly, I'm glad they're working on a new tracking system because it was actually a bit confusing to use the original one to the point that I needed a guide to figure out how to best work it if you were aiming for a particular Pokemon.

Yeah -- I went by using it as a proximity-meter, sometimes, but mostly I end up not using the tracker at all (nor Pokévision, which I literally only ever use post-swimming at the Berkeley campus to look whether there's a Magicarp flopping around for another 4 minutes somewhere close. :)

I got my Vaporeon off an Eevee I caught near a lake, but I think that was coincidence. I did try the rename trick and got my Volteon last night. Now to find the little buggers again and get my third one to be a Flareon.

Not sure about the cheat working post the first time -- definitely works the first time!

The thing is, your chance of getting your heart's desire evolution is supposedly 33%, a 1/3 chance, as Niantic claims it's randomized. That's pretty high a probability either way.

They seriously removed the battery-saving feature from this app?

As well as the footprint tracking (I mean, yeah it's been borked for a while, but was it so unfixable that they took it out completely??)...

I just updated to version 0.31.1 and it's been removed. :(

I stopped using it because in my case, it kept on making the app crash. I noticed that it would freeze on the map screen a lot when I used battery saver and it stopped when I turned it off.

My brother shared https://pokeadvisor.com/ with me!

It links up with your pokemon go account and shows your stats and stuff. Under the "manager" tab it lists all your pokemon with their IV score which I don't completely understand yet (it's like your pokemon's ability to become the best of its type in the game? idk), but overall this seems a pretty nifty little site.

Edited to add: looking at the stats of all the players who have accounts at poke advisor, we've collectively walked far enough to reach the moon over 51 times. Fun fact to throw at all the pogo naysayers! :p

Wow on the moon factoid!

Also, dude -- thanks for the PokéAdvisor! I just, um. What is this IV Score thing? And -- how do I use it?

I don't have any links to share, but my coworker gave me some great advice in revoking the app's access to my camera. After being stuck at level 2 & barely ever being able to catch any Pokemon, I'm now at level 5 and regularly playing during my bus commute because the app crashes less frequently! It's pretty great.

Thanks for these links, I will check them all out!
