I was moving slowly this morning, and got to the park about an hour into the event, although I played all the way there, so didn't miss out in-game. In fact, I got two shinies on my way in! I did lose about half an hour around noon to PTC log-in shenanigans, which did not please me at all. Twitter's advice was to try logging all the way out, "choose another account" and then try again, which would be easier if the log in screen would let you paste passwords out of a password manager, which it won't. Fortunately, one of my fellow players managed to find a pen and a scrap of papers so I could write it down to copy over, and I got back into the game.
I caught something around 140 Charmanders, and -in the closing seconds of the event - made it to three shinies, so I have my set. Charmander and Charmeleon aren't that different (although I feel like they amped the "sparkle" animation this month to make it easier to see?) but Charizard is GAF black and red, and I am kinda tempted to just evolve all three all the way up, even though the appraisals aren't great, if I can amass the candy to do it. Lots of good IV and CP regular examples too - I actually evolved up five new catches, all of which far outstrip the Pokemon I carried with me into the event, and means that the day's been about candy-neutral. (This is very different from April's event, where I only caught two shinies, and only one top-tier-appraisal example.)
The fighting event that was running through the first half of the month has certainly helped boost my options in terms of fights that need Pokemon in that group - I managed to duo an Absol the other week with a level 40 player, which was a close run thing (took two attempts) and I don't think I'd have been able to do that even the week before. No joy with shinies there, though, despite catching plenty.
Still don't have a Latios (fought two so far, both fled) and failed to catch my first Ho-oh of the new raid cycle. I'm not too fussed about it, as that's the one Legendary Bird I did OK on the first time around, but we did all think it seemed harder to take down, which might just have been weather boost, or might be A Thing. I did manage to eventually catch a solitary Latias, before the switch.
Work's been hectic, so I haven't had much opportunity for raiding or other non-ambient playing, except for community days. There were two Unown "events" in London, and I was unable to be in London for either of them, which is a smidge annoying, especially the one that was, literally, the only day in 9 straight days when I wasn't. Oh well.
The Research feature is definitely a winner, though - I'm enjoying the extra aspect to focus on regularly, and the narrative element of the Mew quest. Hugely relieved to discover that the game didn't crash when it tried and failed to AR the Mew! (My phone just doesn't support the games' AR mode.)
Before Gen 3 my pokedex was at 245 caught, 250 seen(5 gap) December 10th it was 252 caught, but 262 seen (+2, 10 gap) Jan 10th was 282 caught and 308 seen (+30, 26 gap) Feb 9th was 310 / 338 (+28, 28 gap), with a 145/95/69 split Feb 24th was 327/359 (+17, 32 gap), with a 147/95/85 split (and I'm past the halfway point on Level 36) March 25th was 347 caught, 366 seen (+20, 19 gap) with a 147/96/104 split. (and I hit Level 37) Current stats are 358 caught, 370 seen (+11, 12 gap) with a 149/96/113 split (Mew, and Moltres being the +2 Kanto, thanks to the addition of Research) I'm past half way in Level 37.
Charmanders almost never appear in my area so while I didn't manage to evolve a Charizard or see any shinies, it was great to catch a bunch of them and get as far as evolving a Charmeleon!
I agree that the Research feature is a winner. There's only one gym in my area, though and most of the local players are Mystic (as am I) so it can take a while or a trip out of town to manage any gym fighting! But it's definitely encouraging me to do that more often.
Great to hear that the event gave you some, which is way better than none ;)
I must admit, for the field research, where you can, I often delete challenges that just aren't going to work with my day (or week) - including some of the gym ones.
I got out catching for 2 and a half hours on CD and ended up with seven shiny Charmanders, my best ever haul by quite a bit. Guess RNG karma was balancing out last month when I saw only 2 shiny Mareep out of over 200. Ended up evolving two Blast Burn shiny Charizards and a couple more non-shiny with better stats/levels. So, dang good day for Poke-catching, which is something anyway since the rest of my life is a mess (but that's off-topic).
Overall I'm now up to 363 caught / 370 seen. Still working my way between Lv 39 and 40...
