There is a update for PokeGo rolling out for Android and iOS. It is a slooooooooow regional rollout, so it might take a while. I still don't have it (Android, Washington DC), but many people already do. ETA @ 9:30 pm edt: I have it. Be patient. Don't panic if you don't see it in the app store yet.
The main update is that they've added an appraisal feature where the team leaders tell you how strong your pokémon are.* Is it as detailed as what you get from IV checkers? No. But from what I understand it's similar to what you get in the original games.
For a breakdown of what the various phrases mean, please refer to this post. Note: Candela's "How exciting!" and "WOW!" phrases are switched.
They've also added "minor bot fixes," as part of their ongoing efforts to stop the cheating problem. I will say the servers have been super stable ever since they started their anti-botter/spoofer efforts. They're probably focusing on this because they don't want to introduce trading until this issue can be minimized as much as possible.
* If you use IV checkers that require you to log in (versus a spreadsheet or a calculator where you input values or an app that asks you to take screencap), be careful. I don't know that using those sites will actually result in a ban, but the reality is that those sites do break the ToS. (If you're getting numbers where Attack and Defense values are split, that site breaks the ToS.)

Based on the wording, it sounds like it was always meant to function that way (and beta testers have said that's how it used to work).

Not like I made a spreadsheet or anything, but I was definitely starting to put some thought into what made sense for me to keep when my bag fills up, so this was good timing for them to fix it, before I got committed and angry ;)
