A friend of mine doesn't play PokeGo but they did play the original games so when they heard I was playing & wondering if there was strategy to gym battles, they sent me a strength & weakness chart of ALL the pokemon. It was too much for me LOL.
I find it easier to think of gym battles in terms of elemental concepts. Water puts out fire. Grass sucks up water. Electricity + water = BAD. Poison hurts fighters. Once I started thinking of it that way, it become so much easier. If you take those sorts of things into account, gym battles become more doable. Like my 900 CP Kingler (whose basic attack is ground) can take on a 1400 CP Flareon (a fire type) and it's awesome. (I also crack up at the gym animation of this giant crab trying mud on a flareon. It looks so offended at being covered in mud.)
