CP rebalancing
As posted a couple hours ago on the official Facebook page
Some early gathering of data on what's changed in these two threads: (in case you, like me, noticed the big changes, but not so much on rarer or less used species.)

Trainers,
We have made adjustments to the CP (Combat Power) of various Pokémon. Some Pokémon, such as Alakazam, Rhydon, and Gengar will have their CP increased. Others will have their CP lowered. These changes will allow a more balanced and competitive battling and training experience in Gyms. We will continue to adjust the CP going forward to improve the game balance when necessary.

I was already mostly parking vaporeons in gyms, cause that's what I have that's high enough CP to hang with the in crowd. Our gyms here are mostly snorlax/dragonite/vaporeon already, and I don't see this changing that much.

I'm still bitter as hell about my Weepinbell losing over a hundred CP right before I had enough Candies to evolve it though.

Plants do seem to have gotten punted in this update, and I'm not sure why, as everything I've seen here in gyms already had them slightly lower than their competition. My condolences, but I hope you enjoy your evolution anyway - it might even be a better trainer matchup!

...well, at least my Tangela got a nice boost, so there's that.

On the other hand, I just went for a walk and FINALLY got a Tauros worth keeping -- CP of 1933 and good IV with a great moveset. That was significant comfort.

But I feel like it's more likely that defenders are just stored in the database in a manner that they couldn't be bothered to change without breaking the game ;) The journal was also reporting cp when captured, not updated CP. Maybe gyms are similarly just storing the line of data that tells it trainer name/Pokemon/iv/moveset. I can't imagine each individual captured Pokemon has a unique identifier that syncs in any sense.
Which reminds me, I was watching as a gym of mine fell a couple days ago, and even after the gym popped up with the new team, it took well over a minute for my fainted defender to be returned to me.
