Belated Free-for-All!

Hello trainers!

I hope you're enjoying the double XP/stardust event and that, if you live in the US, you had a lovely Thanksgiving.

The current in-game event + Ditto + CP rebalancing seems to have stolen a lot of attention, so not much in the way of news. I did find this little piece about how PokeGo can be used to encourage interest in conservation efforts. I thought it was a nice change of pace from all the "POKEGO IS DESTROYING OUR PARKS!!" articles, which -- if you do enough digging -- a not-insignificant number seem to stem from affluent people freaking out over the riff-raff.

Since it's been a while, how are y'all doing? Enjoying the in-game event? Struggling to find a ditto? Mad about the CP rebalancing? Let's chat.

I used lucky eggs, too, and holy moly, you can gain XP fast, can't you? I'm rocketing up during this event.

Congrats on your two new ones!

I'm definitely enjoying the event! :D Haven't found a ditto yet, but I've gained a couple of levels, which is pretty great. :3 Also found a diglett, which is new to me.

I am constantly out of pokéballs, though. Anyone got any tips for getting a stash, or is it just luck?

find a stop you can stay at for a reasonable length of time somehow, where NOTHING SPAWNS. :P Other than that I don't ever seem to get ahead.

Ahahahahaha, somehow I doubt that's gonna happen! Oh well, will just have to try and be more selective with what I catch, I guess.

Yeah, seconding this. The way that spawns got boosted, if you go on what I think most people would consider a normal walk and try to catch what you encounter, you end up way behind on balls. The secret, such as it is, is to avoid temptation and to stay in one place - preferably one place with multiple stops in reach - and you'll eventually pull ahead on items vs. pokemon.

I've found a big park in my area with 11 pokestops. When I can get there, I walk it in a brisk circuit and get the tenth-pokestop-in-30-minutes payout... as many times in a row as I can find the time for.

I've also found a restaurant where I can sit between 2 pokestops; when I take myself out, I take myself there. ;-)

Good luck!

Hooooly crap, that's awesome! I didn't even know there WAS a ten-in-30min bonus!

Maybe when I can walk better I'll try and find somewhere I can do that too! :D

Here's a Trainer Tips video about the "mega-pokestop" bonus. And here's the Silph Road discussion.

Spinning 10 unique pokestops in ~30 minutes or less (some say ~45 minutes or less; I try to be on the safe side), with no more than 9.9 minutes between spins, makes the 10th pay out with double XP and 6-9 items (reportedly, up to 10 if an egg is present; I've never noted this). It's okay to hit the same pokestop multiple times within the duration, but that pokestop counts only once toward the 10.

Apparently, there's an extra bonus if you can manage 20 unique stops, but it resets after that.

Ahh, I think I'll have to go into town for that kind of place. But hopefully I'll be able to hit more local stops soon, my goddamn ankle IS getting better, so!

I also managed to take a rival gym down from level 3 to level 1 today! Wasn't able to defeat the last defender, but since it was a vaporeon with ~2K CP more than my strongest pokémon, I feel okay about that. (I've ALMOST broken 700CP? Almost. Gotta do an evolving and levelling up part sometime soon, probably.)

Congrats on leveling up! \o/

I go to a big, sprawling local cemetery where there are about 20 pokestops and almost nobody's ever there. So I cruise around at 5mph in my car, stopping (STOPPING, not rolling through) at each pokestop to spin and collect stuff. One or two circuits and I'm all stocked up, and usually hatched an egg or two, as well. One could say it's a form of cheating...? But then again, I have mobility limitations, so I figured I'm entitled to a bit of compensatory strategizing. *wry grin*

I am enjoying it very much. Managed to catch a Ditto luckily enough on Wednesday night when I was visiting my mother, who lives in a place where Pidgies and Rattata are far more common than where I live.

I also managed to pretty much get most of the XP to get me to level 27 and I hope to make a decent amount of progress toward level 28 before the event ends.

Rebalancing

[personal profile] brightknightie 2016-11-28 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
The rebalancing has done wonderful things for gym diversity in my area! Before, it was always, always the same 5 pokémon species. Now, you see all kinds of pokémon, and my pet vileplume sometimes even holds the top spot for several hours before a dragonite tops her.

Perhaps it will get boring again once everyone powers up their rhydons, but... fingers crossed! I love having to look up the type advantages to battle a pokémon that I don't know well. :-)

No Dittos for me yet; I hope I can still get one after the event because it doesn't look like I'm getting one during. I have too few Pokeballs to do a proper Ditto hunt, and I'm sick and it's been cold/snowing, but just having the event is great because the daily bonuses for first catch/first stop of the day have boosted my collected XP dramatically. I think I'm going to lucky egg in the next day or two to really maximize the double XP.

No Dittos for me, either. I've been hunting down all the commons I can get, but they stubbornly stay themselves, alas.

I got to Level 31 on the first day of the event -- about a 100K leap in XP -- and have been rocketing up ever since, working the event as much as I can manage because man, do I need the stardust. At the rate I'm going, I will almost certainly get to Level 32 before the event ends.

Also, my local park has turned into a Bulbasaur nest, which makes me ridiculously happy since it's my favorite mon (in all its evolutions). I'm greedily accumulating as much candy as I can before the next nest migration.

I got two Dittos! Woohoo! The first, on the first day, was from a Magikarp and has a 154 CP, and the second, just yesterday, was from a Pidgey and is a humble 96 CP.

The really fun thing was battling a gym with a Ditto in it. Since the Ditto had very low CP, I used my own even lower Pikachu to battle it -- and the Ditto transformed into a Pikachu! Apparently that's what its "Transform" fast move means? Unfortunately I didn't get to try it again to see if it would always transform into a Pikachu or if it would transform into whatever it was battling against or...??? Anybody know?

I've also managed to FINALLY evolve a Charizard. Unfortunately it has the weakest possible moveset. Dang it. But oh, well, at least it's a new one for my Pokedex, which is up to 139, holy crap.

I'm getting discouraged about getting all of them (or at least everything available in the US) because I have never even seen a Hitmonlee, not even in a gym, much less had a chance to catch one. Where do the damn things hang out? Very frustrating.

Question for the hive mind: I have never caught or hatched a Clefable or a Jigglypuff that got a good appraisal (i.e., had IV > 80). And that's in spite of Clefables being common as dirt around here, and Jigglypuffs aren't rare. Is there such a thing as a high IV Clefable? What about Jigglypuff? Should I give up and settle for something in the 70s?
healingmirth: Night Owl II from Saturday Morning Watchmen (thumbs up)

[personal profile] healingmirth 2016-11-29 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I have a fair number of clefables and wigglytuffs that are in the top tier, but I've never bothered checking into their IVs beyond that. My usual pattern is to save anything in that tier and evolve it, and for those two species I don't have a ton of extra candy saved up, so, like, 1 in 13 or so, if I did that math right?

But! They're low enough in the pokedex that the early ones could have been held down by the attack IV weirdness. (I can dig up a link if you hadn't heard about it, but I don't know if it was meant to be a feature or a bug, and it's since been changed) So, relative to eevees, over the life of the game, there would have been fewer 80+ clefairies and jigglypuffs, and could help explain what seems like relative bad luck. Does that help at all?

And apparently I'm going in reverse order here, but: the one hitmonlee and hitmonchan I have were total random catches in residential areas, though I've very recently hatched another hitmonchan. Literally never even sighted another, in that area or anywhere else.

Ditto will transform into whatever it fights first, and stay that way through the end of the battle. It definitely goes back to ditto-form and will transform again next battle, and I *think* it transforms using it's own level/IVs to transfer into an appropriate CP for what it transforms into, but I don't remember if there's research into that or not yet. I trained in a two ditto gym the other day, but wasn't quite on the ball enough to test it.

That's what I'm seeing asserted around the Internet by usually reliable sources, fwiw. I haven't tried any dittos in gyms yet, myself, though.

Here's the GamePress "Ditto Mechanics" rundown, including a video of a ditto v. ditto gym fight ("cute but kind of pointless," they say).

Hitmonchan and hitmonlee

[personal profile] brightknightie 2016-11-29 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Hitmonchan and hitmonlee are difficult to come by around here, too. I have 2 of each right now, though I've had a few other hitmonchans and sent them to the professor so I could power up the one with better IVs (egg-hatched).

I've seen both hitmonchan and hitmonlee in the wild (rarely). They seem to be "spawn once a day" types. I got my extra hitmonchans during a week or so between migrations when I stumbled across a certain point between my office and where I usually eat lunch spawning one most lunchtimes.

I got a hitmonchan on my first day playing. He was 14 lousy CP. But I'm keeping him around. I have no idea where I could get another.

I hatched a hitmonlee recently. It's very low CP and not particularly good on IVs, but it does really well against snorlaxes more than double its CP, so I use it sometimes anyway.

clefairies and jigglypuffs

[personal profile] brightknightie 2016-11-29 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
My one and only clefairy, I caught on a visit to San Francisco during a full moon. Seriously. :-) I've never seen a clefable.

I'm also frustrated by the low IVs of my jigglypuffs. I've only had 2 in the 82%+ bracket. It must be just coincidence, but it feels like a trend.

I have been Real Sad about snorlax, y'all. I stumbled upon one in town a while back, and he was my pride and joy for months despite his relative terribleness, but it's been a long time since he was high enough to be a good gym defender around here, and I just couldn't face the slog of buddying him.

And then today, after hatching onix, electrabuzz, eevee, and hitmonchan out of the eggs I started the event with, I? Hatched a max-hp Snorlax. How I was blithely carrying a 428lb egg in my backpack, I could not tell you, but I will take it.

Caught my first ditto with go+, after giving up on the slog a couple days in, and was prepared to be sad about missing the full song and dance, but I found another one the old fashioned way on Sunday, so all is forgiven. Still pretty neat, and I'll probably drop it in one of our high-turnover gyms as soon as I remember, so I can play around a bit.

Speaking of which, all our gyms are vaporeon, vaporeon, vaporeon, gyarados, vaporeon now, which Zzzzzzzzz.... Super easy to tear down with the jolteon boost, pain in the butt to train up because all my jolteons got boosted and all my plants movesets are half psychic or poison. I think I'm going to try to max an exeggutor just to break up the monotony.

Two Dittos in two days was a highlight ;) - actually 3, but one I traded for candy, because at 10CP it couldn't transform fast enough to not die instantly in battle/training, and there does seem to be a link between Ditto's stats and the stats on transform, which makes powerng up a Ditto have some point.

(Huh - I'm using an Incense as I type this, and apparently you can find Ditto's amongst incense-lured Pidgies... CP62, though, and low stats...)

I finally hit level 30, thanks to the double XP, which is exciting (and Max Revives are a thing - I didn't know that!) and the bonus stardust means I have been able to max-power several of my best beasties to their new mazes, which is satisfying.

I also finally walked my Bulbasaur the gazillion KM it's taken to evolve my first Venusaur - next up Charmander... I also caught a baby Snorlax, so that's three new-to-my-Pokedex critters this week.

I'm not quite organized enough to make a new top level post right now, but in case anyone's browsing around, nest migration hit this evening, and then more (all?) regions got the new tracker shortly thereafter.

I can tell I'm going to be spending a lot more time staring at it than usual, even though I think literally nothing interesting has ever spawned in walking distance of here.
