New Update

inkstone: The Gotcha screen from Pokemon Go (PokeGo)

Hello trainers!

A new update is rolling out. The Silph Road's data mine didn't reveal any new significant changes (the patch notes were the infamous "Minor text fixes"), so perhaps this is an optimization release.

Hello trainers!

Hope your week has been going well and you've been enjoying the influx of new pokemon. While your mod is sad she didn't see any Chansey during the last event, she is laughing at how cute Gen 2 is.

Here are a couple bits that may be of interest:

• Gen 2 brings the addition of two new eeveelutions: espeon and umbreon. As with jolteon, vaporeon, and flareon, you can use the rename trick to get the eeveelution of your choice. In this case, Sakura and Tamao will get you espeon and umbreon, respectively. Remember, the rename trick is guaranteed to work only once, so choose your eevee-to-be-evolved wisely. However, some determined trainers did some research and found another way to get espeon and umbreon without using the rename trick (and thus allowing you to do it multiple times). (read more but also keep this in mind)

• We're getting another in-game event! To celebrate Pokemon Day on February 27, Pikachu will be getting a fancy hat from the afternoon of February 26 until the afternoon of March 6. (more info)

How has your week in PokeGo been going, trainers? Any news from your neck of the woods?

Looks like the servers have calmed down, so get out there this weekend and catch some Gen 2 pokémon or take over some gyms to earn coins to buy new avatar customizations!

• Last week, John Hanke offered a deeper look at Niantic's plans for PokeGo. (Check it out!)

• Pokémon storage upgrades are 50% off until Feb 28th. If you recently bought an upgrade to prepare for the coming of Gen 2, try sending a support ticket. Some trainers have reported getting a refund for the difference. (source)

• There are a lot of changes and refinements in the latest update beyond the launch of Gen 2. From CP rebalancing to moveset changes, it can be overwhelming. Luckily, lists are being compiled on the two major PokeGo subreddits: The Silph Road's list & Pokemon Go's list.

• If you're wondering about some of the interface changes, trainers have been uploading screenshots: new evolution items & new UI features

Happy hunting!

Hello trainers!

I hope you've been enjoying the Valentine's Day event. Remember it ends later today! (Your mod has caught plenty of lickitung but alas! Chansey continues to elude her. The salt is high.)

Now for the big news: Gen 2 pokémon are on their way. Niantic will begin rolling out the update later this week.

In addition to over 80 new pokémon, we'll also be getting:
  • new evolutions -- as well as new evolution items dropping at PokeStops to make those evolutions happen

  • new encounter gameplay

  • new berry types -- one makes the pokémon slower and easier to catch (I think this is a hint about the new encounter gameplay!) & the other doubles the amount of candy received if your catch succeeds

  • new avatars & wardrobe options!!

This looks to be a pretty hefty update. What do y'all think?

As expected, nests have migrated once again. Get out there and see how your local nests have changed.

Note: If you use The Silph Road nest atlas, they've deactivated all pokemon affected by the Valentine's Day event to avoid inaccurate reporting.

Today, Niantic announced that there will be an in-game Valentine's Day event for PokeGo!

During the event:
  • double candy for every catch, hatch, or transfer

  • increased spawns of pink pokemon (will your mod finally get a chansey & lickitung?!)

  • lure modules will last for 6 (!!!) hours

  • the distance required for your buddy to earn candy will be halved

Also, not included in the official announcement but are being reported on The Silph Road subreddit:
  • Eggs have changed! Don't be surprised if you get unexpected hatches (e.g. oddishes from 2km eggs).

  • Increased spawns of porygon. Your mod is confused about this because porygons are not pink...

Enjoy!

Good morning, trainers!

  • If Niantic continues to follow their schedule, the next nest change is set to happen later this week. If you have something good at your local nests, better hit them up soon! They might switch to something less than ideal. I say this as someone whose favorite local nest became a caterpie hotbed. Sigh. Maybe it'll become something good.

  • It looks like Niantic updated the in-game map. Look around! You might find that there are new pokestops and gyms near you! (source)

  • In more somber news, a 60-year-old grandfather was shot and killed by a security guard while playing PokeGo. The guard claims it was in self-defense, but it's hard to imagine the exact circumstances that would necessitate shooting a man through the windshield of his van when he was likely fighting a PokeGo gym. It's an unfortunate reminder that in these uncertain times, every trainer needs to be careful and that not only should they be aware of their surroundings, they also need to be mindful of the impression that they're giving. Take it from someone who's definitely abandoned an early morning gym battle when she saw a security guard in the vicinity. (source)

Hello trainers! I come bearing some news. :)

  • A new update is rolling out for PokeGo. The release notes say that this update will reduce the loading time on Android (thank god!) and fix the Go Plus connectivity issues. Reports are also saying that sound no longer stops when you launch the game. Hopefully this means we can continue listening to podcasts uninterrupted now! The good folks at The Silph Road are currently doing a data mine of the latest update, so hopefully we'll find out if there are any other hidden changes soon. (source)

  • Nests have indeed migrated once again. In the last post, people asked what a nest was and I realized, wow! We never explained that properly, did we? So here we go. Nests are basically locations where a certain type of pokemon spawns in increased numbers. The most obvious manifestation of a nest is one where a specific type of pokemon will spawn in a cluster of 2-3 at the same time. But it can be something more subtle where a specific type of pokemon spawns regularly throughout the day at the same location. I have a spot like this outside my neighborhood, for example. Nests are not the same thing as biomes and early in the game, people got them confused. But half a year out, they're pretty clearly delineated. Want to find out if there are nests near you? Check out The Silph Road's nest atlas! This is user generated though, so all caveats apply.

  • In a blast from the past: Remember last summer when certain jurisdictions wanted to pass an ordinance requiring that augmented reality games obtain a permit to function in certain parks? They're still at it. Wow. (source)

Hello trainers!

It looks like the game has received a minor update, mostly addressing Korean language support. Yes, that's right. PokeGo has officially launched in South Korea! Welcome!

We are also expecting the next nest migration to happen later this week. Be on the lookout!

And since it's been a while, I'd like to have a free chat in the comments. How is your PokeGo playing going, trainers? Noticed any interesting new trends?

The actual release notes are underwhelming (although...are my days of hatching eggs while sitting at my kitchen table over???) but maybe the data miners will find something interesting.

Rumors about a true holiday event have been circulating since the addition of the Gen 2 baby pokémon. Now we have the full details.

1. From December 25 until January 3 (PST), pokestops will award one single-use incubator after your first photodisc spin of the day. There will also be a greater chance of hatching the newer baby pokémon!

2. From December 30 until January 8 (PST), we'll have a greater chance of encountering the starter Pokémon (and their evolutions). In addition, lure modules will last for 60 minutes instead of the regular 30!

(original announcement)

Other interesting newsbits:
  • PokeGo is now on the Apple Watch. (source)

  • The recently held Lapras event in Japan raised $207 million for the town of Ishinomaki, which was hard hit by the 2011 tsunami. Which is great! But kind of terrifying to see the power this game has. (source)

  • The PokeGo community has walked more than 8.7 billion kilometers. Whew! (source)

Hello, trainers! I know I've been bad with news round-ups lately. It's partially adjusting to having a day job again and partially there not being a whole lot of news to round up.

But I've collected a handful of links, so I thought I'd break the pattern and do a mid-week news party!

  • Pokémon Go has finally launched in India and other South Asian countries like Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The hype may have died down elsewhere, but a new wave of trainers are coming in. I can't help but find that amazing! I know India, in particular, has been really eager for the game to go live, so I hope it meets their expectations! (source)

  • Speaking of hype dying down, I'm sure you've all heard the cries of PokeGo dying and how the release of Sun & Moon would destroy it. Nope. It's still making tons of money. The reality is that PokeGo is a mobile game. Its measures of success are different from other game platforms and what a lot of critics are missing is that the core demographic for PokeGo is different: casual players who don't play anything else and open the game occasionally to see if there's anything out and about. (source)

  • And finally, Pokémon Go was the most popular Google search of 2016. (source)

Niantic just announced the addition of more pokémon!
Professor Willow has discovered Togepi and Pichu hatching from Eggs! Starting later today, Trainers will have the opportunity to hatch these and several other Pokémon that were originally discovered in the Johto Region in Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games.

Trainers who play(ed) the main series, what other pokémon do we have to look forward to? Based on the wording, we'll be able to hatch more than just Togepi & Pichu.

ETA: Cleffa, Elekid, Magby & Igglypuff are confirmed! And if you get one of the new baby pokemon, make it your buddy & check out the ADORABLE.

In addition:
Starting later today through December 29, 2016, 10:00 A.M. PST, you’ll find limited edition Pikachu all over the world. These Pikachu will be wearing a festive hat to celebrate the season!

OMIGOD.

ETA: Raichu also wears the santa hat!

But with it getting chilly and downright wintery in certain parts of the world, this is all going to be very tricky!

ETA: NEW FESTIVE LOADING SCREEN.

The nest migration took place last week and as predicted, Niantic rolled out an in-game update. If you haven't received it yet, be patient. They began sending it out to the app stores last night.

The official patch notes are:
  • Trainers will be able to transfer multiple Pokémon at a time to Professor Willow. To use this function, press and hold on a Pokémon.

  • Pokémon type icons have been added to the Gym battle approach and Gym battle screen.

  • The total Candy count for your Buddy Pokémon has been added to the buddy information screen.

  • The total kilometers a buddy has walked has been added to the information screen of each Pokémon that has ever been your buddy.

  • Minor text fixes.

As for what those minor text fixes might be, the good folks at The Silph Road compiled findings from the data mine of this latest update. Some highlights:
  • genders!

  • shiny variants (players of the original games can probably explain this better than me)

  • more avatar customization! (both unlockable & purchasable -- will I finally be able to buy my trainer girl pigtails!!!)

  • pokémon costumes

Keep in mind that this is stuff that's been found in the code and gives no indication of when these features will go live.

That said, Niantic just announced its first U.S. partnership -- with Sprint! 10,500 gyms & pokestops will be added across the country.

Niantic will also be making an announcement about new pokémon on December 12. Will we be getting Gen 2? There have been reports of the data mine revealing holiday-related code, so will we be getting a holiday event? To launch Gen 2?

Guess we'll find out next week!

(Oh! And gym prestige has returned to its previous values.)
