So, at the bequest of my nephew, I've had a really Pokemon-heavy weekend.

First, though, the public announcement part: Kangistan is roaming in the wild in several European cities until the 21st August. London is one of those cities, but the place where my nephew lives is not ...

Just on the way to the station on Saturday morning and home again tonight, though, I caught three Unown's and three Kangistans (two out in Zone 3) so - they seem to be reasonably populous, if people are thinking of daytrips in response to the news.

My nephew was really keen that, in addition to generally playing Pokemon *all day* yesterday, that we should tackle as many legendary raids as possible. As I've never managed to coordinate raiding with others at all, I was glad of the opportunity. Of course, we defeated 5 legendaries and I managed to catch *none* of them, but at least I've seen them in action, and I had a chance at them, which is more than I could say before, and nephew caught 3 of them, but not the Lugio he wanted most of all. Kudos to the Pokemon playing population of Nephew's town for being *super* welcoming and supportive, inclusive, and friendly, and making our day better in many dimensions.

I kind of wish there was some in-game mechanic for coordinating meet-ups, though. I don't really know where to start here in London (not least because "London" isn't a useful geographic area for this kind of thing, being altogether too big to be reasonable), and having some way of ID-ing "other Pokemon Go players within N distance of you right now" would be *really freaking useful*, and is clearly technically feasible as so many other apps are based on doing exactly that.

Looks like problems continued to plague Chicago PokeGo Fest, so if you're one of our Chicago players who attended, here's something for you.

For the rest of us, there's an event to celebrate the addition of legendary pokemon to the game (as Raid Bosses) for the next 48 hours!
  • double stardust

  • double candy

  • double XP (use those lucky eggs for quadruple XP!)

  • reduced hatching distance (looks like this only applies to new eggs put into incubators; an egg I already had in an incubator didn't update the distance)

  • reduced buddy distance

  • increased encounters

(Full details)

Get out there & walk!

PokeGo Fest is running into some problems.

I know some of our members are from Chicago. Hopefully, you weren't one of these people! :/

(I feel like these were predictable issues? Oh Niantic.)

Official announcement here: http://pokemongolive.com/en/post/legendarypokemon

Probably coming worldwide shortly after the Chicago GO fest, as I imagine them unlocking it is pretty much a foregone conclusion. Though it seems like Legendaries will be releasing gradually into the raid pool. I'l also heard scuttlebutt that Legendary raid eggs will have an extra-long lead time, to make it easier to coordinate a large group, though I'm not sure where that info comes from.

Someone over on the Silph reddit also did a pretty nice write-up on which pokemon that you can raise now will be most useful for Gen 1-2 Legendary raids: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/6ogm5u/last_minute_preparation_for_legendary_raids/

For me, right now I've got one Bite/Crunch Tyranitar and one Rock Throw/Rock Blast Golem, plus the usual complement of Eeveelutions and one each excellent Scizor w/Bug, Houndoom w/Dark and Dragonite w/Dragon, so that's a start at least. Sadly neither of my Omastars have the useful legacy rock moveset, oh well.

Egg Change

Eggs have changed again – multiple species added (includes Gen II starters)!

Generation II Egg Chart

I'm quite pleased. So happy that Mantines and Pinecos are in 5 km eggs now. It was awfully frustrating to walk a 10 km egg and get a freakin' Mantine. Also really glad Swinubs are in 5 kms and Chinchous in 10 kms. I got my first Chinchou today! And I need Swinubs for ice medals and candy for the eventual Mamoswine evolution.

I'm at level 28 now!

And to celebrate, starting today at 1PM EDT until July 24 1PM EDT, there'll be an anniversary event in-game.

Highlight #1: A special pikachu wearing the Ash Ketchum hat from the Pokemon anime series. (Your mod cannot deal with the cuteness.)

Highlight #2: The shop will be selling giftboxes that contain incubators, max revives, ultraballs & raid passes.

Original announcement here.

Raids!

As of last night, raids are now available to players 25 and up, and at a "wide variety of gyms" throughout the world. I've got two gyms in map-sight of home; one of them has a level one raid this hour, and the other has a level four raid coming up in a bit over an hour. Hopefully an achievable raid comes soon to a gym near you!

*edit* ha, and the third gym that's just slightly out of sight has.a level three raid in an hour and a half.

*edit 2* and now the first gym has a raid back up again, level two. So I'm feeling pretty good about the frequency.*

Iiiiiiiiinteresting!

I like the new battle pre screen, and the animation of fights.

New battle scoring on the one hand slows things down (you eat away at the defenders will to fight rather than 1000 points per win) on the other hand I like how the "injured" pokemon gets weaker. Also having revive and health available inside the gym interface

Winning a gym = getting a badge, but just claiming a gym slot does not, and nor does spinning a gym picture, which is what the text suggests.

No sign of coins for having pokemon on a gym...
<- artifacts of my posting about experiences in the first 30 mins or so of gyms being live.

How is everyone else getting on?

The update with all of the previously mentioned changes is hitting the app stores! My android phone just got it.

(Gyms are still disabled, however.)

After over a month of connection difficulty at work (thirty miles from where I live) but not at home, I thought the problem had finally resolved itself, and right on time for the Fire and Ice event!

Unfortunately, my issue began again earlier this afternoon (er, yesterday afternoon), and this time where I live rather than where I work. I lost my connection, was unable to log in after restarting the app and twice restarting my phone, and the app is now "unable to authenticate" my account since, in a fit of desperation, I decided to try re-entering my login information.

A quick Google search (which I should probably have tried ages ago) reveals that this is apparently a common problem for people logging in with their Pokemon Trainer Club account, of which I am one.

If anyone knows of a way to fix this, I'd love to hear it; I really don't want to just start a new game with a fresh account, but I also don't want to drive half an hour on the off-chance that being in the city where I work helps.

Edit: Force-closing the app also didn't help.

Edit 2: The fantabulous [personal profile] catness has provided a working fix! I will note that I had to do a bit of extra searching to find an old version of Pokemon Go to install, and fiddle with my phone's settings to allow it to boot, but it did indeed work.

I will also note that some searching tells me that the PTC login issue is only a problem on Android phones; iPhones seem to have no problem logging in with either account type.

So I was just out restocking on items and discovered some places where I couldn't get them, because the pokestop I was going for had become a (currently disabled) gym. Of course once the updates hit and we can spin gyms, this will be all for the better. Meanwhile, I checked out a few local hot spots and estimate that about 10% of existing pokestop locations have converted to gyms. Now that only six people will be able to get on a gym at once, more is certainly welcome!

Spawn points are a little harder to pin down, but I'm pretty sure new spawns have been added as well. I'm very familiar with the possible points in my neighborhood, and just saw quite a few spawns at new locations. Particularly noticeable was the fact that I got several spawn smack in the middle of the road, which almost never happened before and I thought was a no-no to keep kids from wandering into the street (not that you can't reach them from the sidewalk). I almost wonder if someone at Niantic forgot to run a not_on_roads filter when generating a new batch of points... we'll have to see if they stick around.

There are a lot of changes, so just go read the entire post!

In a nutshell:
  • You'll be able to get items from gyms like you can pokestops.

  • Each gym defender must be unique. (i.e. No stacking Blisseys).

  • Gyms will now only have 6 defenders!

  • Gym defenders must be kept motivated via berries or they'll return to their trainers. (I think this is a way to let more people interact with gyms even when all slots are filled?)

  • We'll earn gym badges.

  • The Collaborative Feature: Raid Battles - Basically, from time to time, a Raid Boss will take over gyms -- kicking out all current defenders -- and trainers will have to work together to beat the Raid Boss.

Gyms are going to be disabled in a few hours, so get your bonuses ASAP if you haven't already. ETA 12:41 PM EDT: Gyms have been disabled.
